Journal Sentinal on Self Storage
The Journal Sentinal, based out of Milwaulkee, ran a fairly long story today on the steady growth of the self storage industry during the past few years. Naming everything from a death in the family to a few overflowing drawers as common reasons American families invest in extra storage space, the article's author points out that more than 46,000 new storage facilities have been built in America since 1984. That totals up to more than 1.9 Billion square feet of space - and that's no joke. The piece quotes Paula Poskon from an equity research group. She was interviewed for a little insight into why the storage industry has gotten so big so quickly. From the Sentinal:
"It really is an American phenomenon. We acquire so much stuff, we're such a consuming society, we have to pay someone to keep it for us," said Paula Poskon, a senior analyst in Robert W. Baird & Co.'s McClean, Va., equity research office. "It's typically at a price point where most working people say they'd rather write a check than deal with it," Poskon said."
Very interesting stuff. Link to the complete article at the top of this post.
